Eek! The Cats Presents:

Los Twang! Marvels - Jungle of Twang

I recently had several requests for re-ups and other posts. Sorry for the delay, but here they are!! The first is Los Twang! Marvels' Jungle Of Twang. I am presenting it here at 320K for your listening pleasure!!

Most all of you know that I'm not very "Politically Correct." I believe that Political Correctness is prolly the most dangerous concept to hit the modern world since the splitting of the atom! It prevents true, deep discussion of so many subjects on so many levels for fear of "offending" someone. I think most of you know that I don't have a single "hate bone" in my body and couldn't possibly INTENTIONALLY offend a race, creed, nationality etc. To prove my point, I wrote the ENTIRE preceding paragraph because I wanted to use the word "Mexican," but I realized that it might be taken as stereotyping or talking down etc. Sheesh! :>} So here it is: it seems that a great deal of the really excellent instro surf music is coming from Mexico and other Hispanic nations South of the US border. Los Twang! Marvels is one of those bands. I think ya'll are really going to enjoy it! ... So, was anyone offended? :>}

And, of course, NO Passwords!

I stand corrected!

I was informed by one of the folks whom I most respect for their knowledge of all things surf that Los Twang! Marvels is really a GERMAN band!!! I take full responsibility for not doing the research that I usually do, and I apologize for it. What's funny is that I assumed they were Mexican because of the "Los" in the band's name - so here I am, caught flat-footed stereo-typing and doing what I was railing against yesterday. BUT, if I would have chosen the Politically Correct route, I would still be under the impression that they were a Mexican band.

And who was this person that I respect so much who corrected me? Why, Mr. Teisco, of course! :>} Check out his comment in the "Comments" section! The man knows his stuff!! And I really do appreciate being set straight! - Eek!

If Mr. Pascal will write back and leave a link to where this album can be purchased, I will post it here, and in my next post. - Eek! The Cat

Laika & The Cosmonauts - Laika Sex Machine

The Laika & The Cosmonauts' Instruments of Terror CD is, believe it or not, the first instro surf physical CD that I bought. A few days after I had downloaded The Treble Spankers' Hasheeda, I went to this little hip spot in Atlanta called "Little Five Points" that had an actual record (LP) store called "Wax 'N' Facts" (they sell nothing but vinyl!) and another music store, "Criminal Records," (not quite as "hip" as Wax 'N' Facts) that sells LPs and CDs, and started looking for Instrumental Surf music!

Ahhh. I was so filled with naive hope and enthusiasm. After so many years of my music collection being static (Deep Purple (I am a HUGE Ritchie Blackmore fan! The first concert I went to was in 1968 in the San Diego Sports Arena at the tender age of 14, and I saw The Electric Flag (Buddy Miles), Deep Purple and Cream. Blackmore was at his acrobatic heyday back then, and they were touring promoting the self titled Third Album. But I digress from my digressing ...), King Crimson, Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc.) Now I had a NEW musical passion: Instrumental Surf Music! After about four hours of searching, I began to realize that, for some odd reason, instro surf - or even instrumental music in general - was not categorized as such. There was NO "Surf Section" in any of the stores! And being so brand new to the music, I knew the names of almost NO bands!

Anyway, to make a short story long, I finally found Laika & The Cosmonauts' Instruments of Terror CD and took it home. Sigh. It was a very good beginning to a very good love affair! And I KNOW that ya'll will enjoy Laika Sex Machine at 320K every bit as much as Instruments of Terror! :>}

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Pollo Del Mar - The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Hi, my Friends! I hope the new year is treating all of you well! I am still "employment challenged." It seems not many companies are in the market for a very good, experienced (25 years), custom cabinet and store fixture engineer these days. In my quests, I've even acknowledged that I absolutely do not expect to be recompensed at what used to be the industry standard pay scale.

Ha! My wife is a thrift store junkie and is ALWAYS on the look out for a good bargain. I am disappointed that my peers are not like-minded! :>} Well - 'Nuff said!

I had an odd request from my good friend, Brandinio, today. He said that the link to Pollo Del Mar's The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was dead and asked if I could re-up it. Heh, what's odd is that I have never had that album here as an offering to y'all. :>} As it turns out, my very good and dear friend, DaBoss, over at the Fat City Cigar Lounge (see the link in my sidebar), originally hosted that album back in December of '07.

Anywhooo, DaBoss has some very interesting tidbits to share with you about this album and this group in general, so please go visit him and check out what he has to say about this most excellent San Francisco band! Here is the link to his December, '07 post: http://fatcitycigarlounge.blogspot.com/2007/12/pollo-del-mar-devil-and-deep-blue-sea.html. And tell him that Eek! Da Cat has a newly discovered "Romeo Y Julieta" cigar for him. It's a tubo puro they call a "Short Churchill" (roughly 4 1/2 X 50) that is "Heaven in a tube!" And it's only $4.99 per stick! :>}

Oh, and just in case you would like to download the music that you actually came for ... :>}

Now we move to some albums from his band, "The Bunnies." No, I don't know what he was thinking of ... :>}

Takeshi Terauchi - The Bunnys Singles 1 -
Little Devil (Japan)

I'm assuming this is a collection of songs that were previously released as singles (yeah, I know: Duh!!) This is The Bunnys Singles #1, which will be followed by (drum roll please) The Bunnys Singles #2! :>}

I'm not positive that this is the correct cover for this album. If anyone has a better version, let me know, and I'll make it available! I found this picture from here: http://jessekaminsky.com/intercontinental/playlists/07-23-08/ - which is a "radio" show called "Jesse Kaminsky's The Intercontinental."

Also, while looking for this album cover, I ran across a brief history of Takeshi Terauchi. His story REALLY surprised me! It's at the bottom of this page: http://60spunk.m78.com/gsbands.htm.

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Takeshi Terauchi - The Blue Jeans - Complete Collection

Takeshi Terauchi is somewhat of an instro surf legend and a ground breaking instro guitar player in general. He was involved in creating the "Eleki" style of playing (see my post from July of '07, "Takeshi Terauchi - Let's Go Eleki-Bushi" (http://eektcat.blogspot.com/2007/07/eek-cat-presents-eleki-takeshi-terauchi.html)) after The Ventures took Japan by storm in 1962. For a really good explanation of the "Eleki" style and some of the history behind it, see the article I quoted from in my '07 post at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surf_rock).

Anyway, here are some of the really great songs that have become instro surf staples, and others that are just plain excellent. This collection is presented in 320K! :>} I truly believe that ya'll will REALLY enjoy this one and the second offering in this post: "Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys - Let's Go Classics."

Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys - Let's Go Classics

"Let's Go Classics" has many of my own personal favorite songs on it that you just don't really hear anywhere else. Songs like Sabre Dance, Hungarian Dance No. 5 and even the Terry's Eleki version of The Flight of The Bumble Bee show his eclectic and wide, wide taste in world music while keeping true to his own style.

I have to admit that after hearing the Surf Coaster's unbelievably fast and accurate rendering of nearly every note that Al Hirt played on his stinging, virtuoso presentation of Flight of The Bumble Bee (which was used as the theme song for the '60's television series The Green Hornet - featuring a young Bruce Lee as the Green Hornet's "sidekick", Kato) , Terry's version is nowhere near as polished, but it still stands as pure Takeshi Terauchi.

On a side note (pun intended), according to Wikipedia, "The music of "Flight of the Bumblebee" was so strongly identified with The Green Hornet that it was retained as the theme, orchestrated by Billy May (who also composed the new background scores) and conducted by Lionel Newman, with trumpet solo by Al Hirt, in a jazz style nicknamed Green Bee. Years later, this music was featured during a key scene in the 2003 film, Kill Bill, Vol. 1, which paid tribute to Kato by featuring dozens of swordfighters wearing Kato masks during the film's key fight sequence."

Also, there are rumors that The Green Hornet is making a comeback in a new movie: "Columbia pictures has confirmed that Stephen Chow, director of Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, will direct the upcoming Green Hornet movie. Chow will also star opposite Seth Rogen’s Hornet as Kato, a role popularized by fellow Hong Kong-ian Bruce Lee." - Source: Filmdrunk - September 22, 2008.

Eek! The Cat Presents:

The California Guitar Trio - An Opening Act (Tour With King Crimson)

I know this isn't exactly surf instro, though there are several surf standards in their play list, but I can guarantee that you've never heard them played like these guys. They are three acoustic guitarists who all studied under Robert Fripp, the virtuoso/genius behind King Crimson. They are from different parts of the world, and they mostly jam and write music via the internet.

I had the extreme pleasure of seeing them in concert in a very tiny and intimate venue, and I was and still am astounded at the synchronization and perfection of their playing. Aside from their version of songs like "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" and "Misirlou," just wait until you hear them perform, and even though this will sound really hokey, actually create a solid wall of sound that is "Toccata And Fugue In D Minor," you will be amazed!

I'm REALLY looking forward to hearing what ya'll have to say about this little acoustic guitar trio. :>}.

"Gee, it never hurts to help"

By Special Request From Anonymous:

The Blue Wahini Serenaders - Aloha!

This is by special request and is NOT your typical instro surf! It's actually authentic Hawaiian music. I lived in Hawaii back from 1958 through 1961, back before it was commercially developed. We lived, for a time, about two blocks from Waikiki Beach. There were no high rise hotels or anything like that. It was mostly pristine sand and jungle. I was even there when it gained statehood. The songs on this album just remind me of those times. We used to actually sing "Aloha Oe," and several other songs on this collection, and I just thought ya'll might enjoy listening to some of it. It was on one of those Russian ifolder sites, which are EXTREMELY difficult to navigate if you don't speak Russian! :>} I figured them out a while back, and because the request was so sincere and enthusiastic, and because I think you really might actually enjoy this wonderful island music played by consumate musicians, so here ya go! :>}

The Surf Kings - Coming Up For Air

Hi Folks! I think you might really enjoy this 2004 album from The Surf Kings. It's their second album, and it really kicks butt! This is one of the all time best bassists I've ever heard in an instro surf band!!!! I kid you not, if you don't have this album, you NEED it!! And that is straight from the Cat's mouth!

I can't remember who to thank for this gem, but you know who you are, so thank you!!! :>} And it's in 320K too!

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Dave Myers and The Surftones - Moment of Truth

I thought ya'll might like this 1999 album of more traditional style surf instro. What really caught my ear was the first track, "Frog Walk Pt. II." Now, I've heard many times the sound of a "nasty" sax and even a "nasty" trombone ("Nasty" in the best possible down and dirty sense), but I've never heard a nasty trumpet before. They are always so clear and even powerful, but never nasty. Well, here it is. Just take a listen to it, and Yes, it IS a trumpet, and it Is down and dirty nasty! It's most excellent! The rest of the album, while traditional, is still in the same vein. Let me know what you think.

And this one, too, comes to us by the good graces of Mr. Teisco in 320K.

While I have your ear (they will all be returned forthwith), I'm sure you've all heard of the 700 Billion dollar bailout debacle here in the US. That's nearly 3/4 of a Trillion dollars. We hear the word "Trillion" so often these days that it just doesn't seem that much more than a billion or even a million. I'd like to put it in perspective for you (and I've run the numbers myself, so you can take this as The Cat's Truth): If you were to count from one to one million, one number every second, it would take you about eleven and a half days. BUT, if you were to count from one to one trillion, one number every second, it would take you MORE THAN THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND YEARS!!! Yup. You heard it here. I say "Vote against ALL incumbent politicians in every election until they realize that we KNOW that they believe their main job is to get re-elected first, and then maybe serve their constituents second." Grrrr. Don't get me started.

Ok, here are your ears back, and thank you for the loan!

Eek! The Cat Presents:

The Mercury Four - Codename: Aurora

The first thing I want to say is to let you know, and this is going to sound SO smarmy that I apologize in advance, but your comments all during the time I was gone, and then all of the welcome back comments actually left me sitting in front of my computer with tears running down my face. Now, let me stop right here and say that I am a big, manly man. I've been a cabinet maker for 25 years and a musician for more than 40 years, so for some odd reason, admitting my emotional reaction to you, all of my friends, the ones I've "spoken" with and the ones that I haven't, is extremely difficult. I guess it's the stigma that manly men should be strong all of the time. But in this age of ultra hate and intolerance, the fact that so many folks I've never even met would take time out of their day to send me words of support and encouragement just really struck me as something strange and wonderful. I want to thank every one of you, but I don't know any better way than to just say Thank You.

Ok, I told you it would be smarmy and embarrassing, but I've said it anyway. :>} On to the music!

The Mercury Four are a comprised of former members of The Deep End and The Splashdowns, two of Seattle's finest instrumental bands (according to Phil dirt). All I know is that this 2007 album impressed that heck out of me! It's an adventure into high energy and a heavy fullness that so many bands strive for but fall short. I REALLY know ya'll are going to love this entire album!

I hope that it hasn't already been posted by one of my other friends (see the site list in the side panel). I just haven't had time to search them all out. This comes to us from the great and powerful Mr. Teisco, and is presented in 320K.

The album is over 100 MB, so I split it into two separate and independent zip files. Just download them both and extract them into the same folder.

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Holy Cow! It's Heavy Surf!

First off, I just got back from the Left Coast - beautiful, sunny, southern California! I went out to visit my brother and his wife for his 50th birthday! Woo Hoo! The plane ride out there was great! I was treated like a king! The Captain met me at the door of the plane and personally stowed my Martin acoustic guitar in what he called his "guitar closet." Then he told me the only catch was that if the movie didn't work, I would have to play for the folks! When we arrived, he met me at the door and personally handed me my baby. On the way home, my flight was delayed for two hours, and I was also treated like they would rather I be assigned to the cargo hold. What a difference good personnel can make! It only goes to prove my motto, "Gee, it never hurts to help!"

Also, someone recently request an album that they have been looking for for a long time, but I can't find that comment! But to let you know, that album was recently posted by my good friend, Ryp, over at the Twilight Zone blog! So, if you are that person, go do a Google Site Search over there, and you'll find it!

On to the music!

These albums are all new to me, and Man, are they HEAVY! I'll try to keep my ramblings to a minimum 'cause their is a TON of music I have for you!

These first two albums are courtesy of the kind and influential Mr. Teisco.

First up is a band called Alwaro Negro with their 2004 album Is Dead?!.

Alwaro Negro - Is Dead - 192K

From the very first song, Trafficando Inseguimenti, it's heavy and it's reverb drenched. It's heaviness is reminiscent of the Coffin Daggers first full length LP. What I'm tryin' to say is, "You GOTTA hear this album!" Whooooeee! Yessiree Bob!

While it's only at 192K, it's still crystal clear instro goodness!

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Tribute Day!

I find it so amazing that the "Surf" Instro folks are so versatile that they can play just about any genre of music, and make it sound great, and sometimes even better than the originals!

I think I'd like to start Tribute Day off with an album called:

Shots In The Dark - A Tribute To Henry Mancini - 320K

Personally, I think Henry Mancini was a musical genius. To be able to write such memorable music "on demand" is a rare and envious gift. What I mean is, a lot of folks write stuff that is comparable, but they do it in the leisure of their own time zone. But to craft something like the Pink Panther Theme, Experiment In Terror, or Peter Gunn, and to do it when someone says "I need a great theme song, and you have 30 days to to do it," or whatever - THAT is beyond my comprehension! That is what separates the merely great from the genius! :>}

Most of these albums are in two separate rar files ('cause most of the albums are at 320k). Since so many folks have trouble with split rar files, I like to put them into two totally independent files. All This means is that you need to extract both of them individually into the same folder.

And remember that if you happen to get a "corrupted rar file, try using the "Repair" function as I always try to put a 3% recovery record into each file.

Track Listing:

Shots In The Dark - A Tribute To Henry Mancini - 320K

01 - Banzai Pipeline - The Boardwalkers
02 - Baby Elephant Walk - The Jigsaw Seen

Swingin' Creepers! A Tribute to the Ventures - 320K

In 1966, when my Dad brought a Guyatone guitar with a whammy bar and a Guyatone amp with reverb and tremolo back from Japan as a Christmas gift for me (he was a Load Master in the Air Force), I borrowed a "Learn To Play Guitar" album by The Ventures from a friend. I learned every part, bass, rhythm and lead for two songs - Tequila and Walk, Don't Run. So, yeah, these guys have had a major impact on my musical life. :>} And speaking of Walk, Don't Run, you ought to hear Chet Atkins version! Whooooeeeee!

And now, for your listening pleasure:

13 Crimson Ghosts - Tribute To The Misfits - 192K

Ok, I admit that I don't know much about these guys. And in fact, the main reason that I first started listening to "The Misfits" is because of their Universal Monsters album covers! Yeah, I'm a HUGE fan of Frankenstein (especially The Bride Of Frankenstein! Such a tragic/romantic story! And "No," I'm NOT gay - not that I could care less about anyone's orientation one way or the other! "People's is People!"), The Wolfman, Dracula, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, et. al.. In fact, I LOVE black & white monster movies of just about all kinds - from Grade A to Grade Z!

When I was 10, It! The Terror From Beyond Space came on TV, and the scene where the guy was being held in the air ducts as bait scared the bejezus out of me! It wasn't until years later that I found out that the "monster" was really Ray "Crash" Corrigan in a rubber suit. And Yes, this 1958 movie really IS what Alien was remade from! And for us hard core SF fans, It! was supposedly inspired by A.E. Van Vogt's "Voyage Of The Space Beagle." I need to find a copy of that book ...

Ha! Sorry! I am VERY easily distracted from one passion to another! Just watch out if I start in on a ramble about my theories on astrophysics and quantum mechanics .... (seriously!)

Track Listing:

13 Crimson Ghosts - Tribute To The Misfits - 192K

And now for something completely different:

That's New Pussycat - Surf Tribute To Burt Bacharach - 320K

Burt Bacharach? Really? But ... but ... ummmm, yeah. Ha! The joke is on you if you don't grab this one right away and queue it up! Picture this: "Deadbolt," one of the Heavies of the Heavies playing "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" and doing it with a totally straight face and serious attitude. AND IT WORKS!!!! And another real treat is a band called Petty Booka. I have their first album, and I'm amazed and at a complete loss for words to try to describe it or their sound. Yeah, imagine Eek! The Cat being at a loss for words! But just you wait! They do one of Bacharach's tunes called "Baby, It's You." You might remember it from the '70's/'80's by a band called Smith. The Smith's version is one of the permanent selections on my mp3 player. Bwahahaha!! I just had the thought of what y'all would think of me if you knew what my playlist was. There are twenty or thirty songs that remain, and the rest change from day to day. But I crave your respect too much to risk it by "telling all!"

Now THERE'S an honest sentence that not many would utter ... :>}

Ok, so here it is:

Track Listing:

That's New Pussycat - Surf Tribute To Burt Bacharach - 320K

01 - Apemen - 24 Hours From Tulsa

And lastly (for now):

Guitar Ace - Link Wray Tribute - 320K

There are SO many more Surf Instro tribute albums, that is was very difficult to choose what to post and what to hold for next time. Albums like Charlie Does Surf (A Clash Tribute), Takin' Out The Trash! - A Tribute To The Trashmen, Evil Fuzz Davie Allan Tribute and on and on! But I knew if I didn't make a choice, y'all would eventually wander away out of boredom!

SO many of Link Wray's original songs have become staples of the genre. Songs like Rumble, Jack The Ripper, and his version of Raw-Hide are songs that seem like they have always been! And you've prolly heard the story of Link wanting a rougher sound to a particular song
(I'm not sure which), so he took a sharpened pencil a punched holes in his speaker! Violin!(Viola) The first "fuzztone!" :>}

Track Listing:

Guitar Ace - Link Wray Tribute - 320K

Just A Very Quick Upgrade Update

If you liked The Hour Of The Gun post below, then, thanks to Mr. Teisco, here is an upgrade to 320K! Oh, and one more thing. If you ever download one of my rar files, and it seems corrupted, I always try to put a 3% Recovery Record in each file. Winrar has a Repair feature that can often save a corrupt file if it has a recovery record, so, there ya go! :>} (BTW, this was suggested to me by our good friend, Al Zombie some time back!)

A Non-Musical Update

I was in such a hurry to get that post finished that I didn't get the chance to talk to y'all like I like to do. I'll try to keep from rambling, like I also like to do! :>}

First off, that wonderful undead, Al Zombie, informed me that The Tiki Men album came from our very good friend, Ryp, over at the Twilight Zone blog. If I know Ryp, (and I do), he won't mind. In fact, that's how I met him - I posted an album that I got from him at the great and mysterious place that is sometimes known as "The Usenet." Someone jammed me up about not giving Ryp credit for originally posting it. Well, I was fairly new to posting back then and didn't realize the etiquette, So I went right over to the Twilight Zone, and in a comment, confessed what I had done and apologized. Ryp, being the ultra-friendly guy that he is, told me not to worry about it and that I was welcome to any and all of his posts. A very deep friendship developed from there. He, in fact, mentored me in the "art" of mp3 blogging .

Next, and this is REALLY off the wall. In America, we've always had these TV commercials for new products that aren't available in stores, like the "Popeil Pocket Fisherman," and the infamous "Aquadots." Ever since I've been seeing these commercials, invariably halfway through the commercial, the announcer will say, "But Wait! If you order today, we'll DOUBLE your order for FREE blah blah blah." It was always FOR FREE. Well, lately they've changed it to "FOR FREE (just pay separate processing and shipping)." Now, the "separate processing and shipping" usually adds up to $12.95!!! I've always believed that WORDS HAVE MEANING!!! "Free" means "Free." An extra $12.95 is NOT "Free." This just drives me bonkers! If I ever ordered any of that crap, I'd have to tell them to skip the "free" stuff as I couldn't afford to pay for the "free" stuff!

And lastly, I'm kinda embarrassed at how long it took me to put together that last post. I was nearly recovered from my "death's door" illness, and I came down with pneumonia of all things!!! Sheesh! The first round of antibiotics didn't work, but the second round, using a new one (new to me) called "Levaquin" finally kicked it's butt after ten days. It's supposedly an antibiotic that goes after bacterial infections in your organs. Antibiotics (like penicillin) usually make me deathly ill, but this one really wasn't too bad!

Well, I said I wasn't going to ramble on - I lied ... :>}

I'm also back to work (yea!!). I'm a design engineer, and sitting at a computer all day isn't too taxing ('cept it makes my brain hurt ... heh). I've also been writing quite a bit of new music. I have a Martin D-15 (the one with the Sitka Spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides - NOT the Mahogany one), and I play mostly in open G and open G minor tunings. Led Zeppelin and Joni Mitchell used to do a lot of stuff in open G tuning. I learned from John Fahey and Leo Kottke (though I'm not NEARLY as talented as Kottke!). My stuff tends to be more flowing rather than like Kottke's arpeggiated choppiness. I've got prolly two albums worth of original stuff which I desperately need to record.

Well, that's about it. If y'all have any requests for a post, don't hesitate to let me know!

Eek!

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Tiki Day At The Cat House!

As suggested by one of our good friends from Sweden, Joel, It's Tiki Day here at the Cat House. And what a GREAT idea! :>}

This first one is the Tiki Tiki Bamboooos' first album titled ... well ... Tiki Tiki Bamboooos! WARNING!!!!: There are some vocal tracks! Don't get me wrong - I really don't have anything against vocal music. I just normally like my Instro Surf to be Instro! :>} The Tiki Tiki Bamboooos have a strange sort of pedigree. I don't know a WHOLE lot about them, but I believe they're from Germany, which strikes me funny as they are playing what used to be mainly American type music, but their album cover has Japanese characters on it, and the girl, Polly-BAMBooooS (Bass, Vo), sings in Japanese on one song. They say they're from "Jawaii," half-way between Hawaii and Japan. :>} (Did you know that the Hawaiian language is comprised entirely of only 14 different sounds?) Phil Dirt, of Reverb Central, says that the guitarist is "Possibly the most liquid guitar in surf." I ... don't think I would go that far (Surf Coasters, Mach IV, etc.)

He also says of their second album, "Where Is Your Secret Spot?":

More great songs from one of surfdom's most original bands. Unfortunately, they were unable to get the engineer to go beyond a demo sound, so that ultra rich sound from the last album is missing. The songs are still great, just not pushed to the edge by that lush sound.

As before, there area coupe of cool vocals among the intro magic. "Bella Ciao" is a bouncing number with Oriko singing in Japanese, Miyaji sings accompanied by Oriko in Japanese, Oriko's pussy cat "Ob La La," which borrows a few lines from "In The Mood," "Beach (intro)" is a soundscape from the beach, and "Jawaiian Beauty," which is a slow and romantic song with a German tale that reminds me a lot of song of Kraan's early work.

Anyway, let me know what you think of this one and their next album, Where Is Your Secret Spot?.

The band's website is http://www.tikitiki.de/.

This first two albums are courtesy of Mr. Teisco!

Next up:

The Tiki Tones - Idol Pleasures

I admit that I haven't listened much to The Tiki Tones. But that's only because I haven't gotten to them yet! Here's a bit of info that came with one of the albums:

From "behind the Orange Curtain", somewhere near Disneyland, The Tiki Tones play music of the swinger's choice. You can dance the evening away, swig down Zombies and Chi Chis' from your favorite tiki mug, work the room of any swinging party or just seduce your favorite member of the opposite sex to the music of the magical Tiki Tones. Koro play drum, Ku play bass, Lono play guitar and Lord Wahini play organ! Formed from the 80s folk-rockin' Swamp Zombies, The Tiki Tones have become world-renown with their exotic sound and have recently become Y2K compliant with the addition of new keyboard sounds and a wonderful female go-go dancer who belts out a few tunes on the mike! People ask, does the famous artist Shag have something to do with this band? Well, go check out Shag's website, as well as The Tiki Tones own site and figure it out for yourself!

And finally, to wrap up the day:

The Tiki Men - Twelve Dusty Diamonds

Our final offering also comes to us from that land from beyond and all around nice guy - Al Zombie! And this one is also presented at 192K. I don't know much about these guys either, so I hope they tickle your fancy!

I don't usually like to use other folks' reviews, but since I am bereft of my own knowledge about The Tiki Men:

The Tiki Men's Twelve Dusty Diamonds chronicles the dark, dirty, raw
adventures of a wave-loving surfer stranded in the desert. Armed with only
some beer and a guitar, his journey is all about finding meaning in a waterless
world.

Well, maybe I listened to it too many times, too late at night. Either way, this
is one hella fine album of instrumental surf music. The Tiki Men combine
undeniably catchy hooks with rough lo-fi production in an album which varies
in mood and intensity, taking you from irreverent excitement to loneliness
and despair, and back again. As the title suggests, this is a musical diamond
in the rough- check it out.

-Lizzie Boredom

Eek! The Cat Presents:

The Hour Of The Gun

More basgethetti, anyone? :>} This is only at 128K, but it's another of the fine "One Million Dollar" productions.

I truly don't know how to thank you all for your well wishes during my illness. It's been said that you can really tell your friends who are the ones who stick around when you are down. But please accept my heart felt thanks and freely given life-long friendship. But I don't want to get too mushy, which I would if I didn't stop my self...

So on to the music! This one comes to us by way of Al Zombie.

The website where you can purchase a copy of this is http://www.onemilliondollarrecords.de. One thing for sure - they have great taste in comps!

Ya know, I was watching The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly today on Hallmark, and the opening theme song is SO much superior to the Hugo Montenegro release, that I can't believe that for all of these years, I thought it was the same song (taken straight from the movie). Even the indistinguishable lyrics are different. In Montenegro's version, it sounds to me like they are saying in one part, "Don't want no ... no Redrum!" (Like Danny in The Shining ....). But in the original score, they are different, and I couldn't quite make them out. Also, the original is so much more full and colorful!

Also, I had the opportunity to see 1949's The Third Man on TCM this weekend. The reason that was so significant to me is that so many Instro Surf bands do the "Theme From The Third Man." Well, you could have picked my jaw up from the floor with a stick and a piece of bubble gum, because at the very start, where it's showing the opening credits, there is a full frame shot of a sounding board for a zither - strings and all. Suddenly this happy, but complex tune starts coming from the zither, and it plays the whole song never pulling back to see the picking or chording - just the strings vibrating as they are being plucked. And knowing the this was a "thriller" movie, and the song was so ... happy ... well, it was pretty darn genius 'cause it was creepy.

The zither player is credited to a Anton Karas . The most accurate version that I have to what I heard is from the "Guitar Mania" series, Volume 6 by a band called "The Sky Devils." It was also done by Al Caiola, The Blue Moon Rockers & The Shadows.

Well, enough blithering, for now ... :>} I'll try to do at least one post per week, if not more, and if I post something that's been posted at one of the other fine blogs, it is truly unintentional.

And thank you again, everyone.

Eek! The Cat

Eek! The Cat Presents:

Ladies Day!

The Trashwomen - Spend The Night With The Trashwomen

The Trashwomen are a fun romp in the surf more on the "punkier" side of the genre. And they even do some vocal tunes (sort of ...)! But all in all, I can whole-heartedly recommend this album to you, which includes a mix of instro surfin' standards and raw, stompin' originals. One grain of salt: if you're looking for technicians ... keep looking. But if you're looking for good, hard, sexy sun and surf, then stop right here and grab hold! :>}

If anyone likes what they hear, let me know, and I'll post their live album, Live At Tom Guido's Purple Onion from 1994. Now THAT one is ruff 'n' raw!! :>}

Track Listing:

The Trashwomen - Spend The Night With The Trashwomen - 192K

01 - Marguya
02 - Perversion
03 - Daddy Love
04 - Peter Gunn
05 - Date's On Me
06 - Nightmare At The Drag
07 - Sling Rave Curvette
08 - Space Needle
09 - Justine
10 - Quasimoto
11 - Cum On Baby
12 - I'm Trash

Next up is one from Susan & The Surftones, 1996's Thunderbeach.

This album is also a mix of standards and originals with the main difference being these folks ARE technicians! She can REALLY kick out the clean, reverb coated goodness that we normally associate with instro surf. My personal opinion on this album is that she felt she needed to prove that she could play the standards as well if not better than most of her male counterparts. But on more recent albums, like Fluid Drive, released last year (2006), she goes for more of the mellower side of guitar instro while on 1998's Bitchin', it's more hard drivin'. What I'm trying to say is she can and does play all sides of surf!

Ok, all of that being said, I also feel that this album is lacking a certain something that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe "Oomph" is the right word ... or something like it ... What do you think?

Track Listing:

Susan & The Surftones - Thunderbeach - 160K

And last, but certainly not least, the only album released by these young ladies, The Astronettes! (Click to enlarge - and the cover is a HUGE 8 MB included in the rar file ... heh)

This album ALWAYS generates a lot of controversy. I can assure you that it IS a real album which was released in 1990, but that's about the only real fact that I know about this little gem. The most excellent Ryp, over at the Twilight Zone posted it last May, and it generated a lot of buzz! Most folks believe it is a re-release of The Astronauts Movin' album as the track listing, though the names were changed (to protect the innocent) slightly to give them a little more zing (as if the cover wasn't zing enough! :>}). Here is my opinion (clipped from a comment I posted at TZ):

I own The Astronauts, "Movin" (1990), which has several of the same songs (with the titles "stylized" on the Astronettes album), and I had to listen to several songs several times to come to my own opinion. The Astronettes are incredible mimics, but they aren't the same songs. Not only is the EQ different, but some (not many) of the notes are different through out the songs.

The most obvious is the song "Firewater." On the Astronauts version, listen really closely, and you'll hear that the 6th note of the starting riff is out of tune every time he plays it, while on the Astronettes "Firewaters Of Alpha Gabba," it isn't! Also, the Astronettes flub several notes in the run several times.

And, I know how weird this next is going to sound, but I'm a synesthete (have been all of my life), and the Astronauts music is a VERY different color than the Astronettes. The Astronauts have more variations of black running through it, while the Astronettes are more gold oriented (that was an EXTRTEMELY simplified explanation of the "color" variations).

No, I think that the Astronettes are great mimics, but I don't think they are remixes of tracks already laid down by the Astronauts. That DOESN'T mean that the Astronauts didn't re-record the songs to perpetuate a hoax, or a marketing thing like the clones of Man Or Astro-Man? have done. (No, I'm NOT putting Man Or Astro-Man? down! :>} I have every single one of their albums!)

So that's it! Let me know what you think of the nude surfer controversy!

Track Listing:

Eek! The Cat Gratefully Presents:

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - Savvy Show Stoppers

There are several hundred ways I've been wrestling with on how to start this post, but they're all stuff like "Shout Outs To My Friends," and "From The Grave To The Rave," but they're all surface level, P.R. hype type stuff. What I really want to say is just "Thank You." From the center of the most humble place in my heart, I know who my friends are, and they are you. All of y'all's comments made the darkest days bearable and kept me all "smiley."

Ok, I don't want to get all mushy and stuff (well ... actually, I DO, BUT ....:>}), all I will say is that you can really tell who your true friends are when you're down and have nothing to give, but they keep "stopping by" to give well wishes.

I'm going to try to be as consistent as possible in getting back to posting, but I might still miss a day here and there. But anyway, there are now so many really great blogs posting our beloved Instro Surf and other related music like Instro Garage, true Spy, Crime etc., that I'm going to have to be on my toes to keep from posting what's already been posted!

On to the music! Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet were an ultra excellent Canadian Instro band that started up in the '80's, put out three full length albums and tons of EPs before breaking up in the mid '90's. The guitarist, Brian Connelly, is now playing with a band called "Atomic 7." No, I've never heard of them either, but now I'm sure gonna look for them! And after you hear this album, "Savvy Show Stoppers," I bet you will too. If anyone finds anything by them, like my dear friend, Trustar, says, "Could you help a poor alter boy out?" :>}

This album is a collection of stuff from some of their EPs, and the tunes run the gambit from HEAVY, tight, crisp, almost-metal to a GREAT version of Sinatra's "Summer Wind."

From the Wikipedia:

Members

The band members were:

* Don Pyle on drums
* Brian Connelly on guitar
* Reid Diamond on bass - died of cancer in 2001

History

They released a string of EPs and singles throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, achieving some success. The group also appeared on many compilation albums. The band won a 1992 Juno Award from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for "Instrumental Artist of The Year". The group disbanded in 1996.

And here is their Un-Official Site: http://shadowy.brainiac.com/.

Track Listing:

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet - Savvy Show Stoppers - 320K

01 - Good Cop Bad Cop
02 - Musical Interlude
03 - Theme From T.V.
04 - Zombie Compromise
05 - Malfunction
06 - Shake Some Evil
07 - You Spin Me Round `86
08 - Run Chicken Run
09 - Bennett Cerf
10 - Egypt Texas
11 - Customized
12 - Our Weapons Are Useless
13 - Shadowy Countdown
14 - Harlem By The Sea
15 - Having An Average Weekend (Theme from Kids In The Hall)
16 - Misty
17 - Summer Wind
18 - Big Baby

And yes, it IS in glorious 320K! The first song, "Good Cop Bad Cop," has an ALMOST un-noticable glitch in it right in the beginning. The guitar does a note and then leans on the whammy bar, and about a half of a second of the note is cut off. I've included a 192K version of the song without the glitch (It's labeled as 192K) as a "just in case" type thing. But it really doesn't detract from the song.

I think you're really going to like these guys, so "play Misty for me!"

A Note To My Friends From Eek! The Cat

Hi Folks. And I have come to think of all of you as my close and personal friends. I want to apologize for being absent for so long. My health took a bad turn, and y'all nearly had a dead cat on your hands! It kind of reminds me of Monty Python's skit about burying the cat:

"Oh, 'ello, Mrs. Privett. I just spent four hours burying the cat."

"Four hours to bury the cat?"

"Yes, it kept wriggling about, 'owling an' such."

"Oh, then it wasn't quite dead?"

"No, but it isn't at all well, and as we're going away for a fortnight, we wouldn't want to come home to a dead cat!"

Well, something like that. Anyway, I'm attempting to land on all fours. I'm out of bed a bit more every day. I hope to be getting things here back to normal as soon as I can. Again, I apologize. I know what it's like checking a blog, and it isn't being updated. But if you can bear with me, I will try even harder to make this a fun place to visit. And thank you in advance for not pressing for details. I will tell you it's NOT HIV, AIDS or ANYTHING like that. But I AM recovering slowly.

On a side note, Sean, from Double Crown Records left a couple of comments asking me to remove some albums that are his and available on his website - http://www.dblcrown.com/, which is a wonderful place to buy surf music. It's my policy that if an owner of an album that I have posted asks that it be taken down, I take it down with no questions asked. The three albums that I have removed the links (and killed the Sharebee links) to are The Hell Benders and both of The Penetrators albums.

I WANT these folks to make money, and the main reason that I have this blog, as most of you know, is to expose folks to this most excellent genre of music in hopes that folks will hear something they like and go out and buy more of it, so that the artists can make more music!

So that's it. As soon as I am able to stay out of bed long enough to make a decent post, you'll be the first to know.

And THANK YOU for all of your wonderful birthday wishes! And a special thanks to Ryp, Trustar and DaBoss for your comments. I honestly don't feel deserving and am extremely humbled.

And Al Zombie, JimK, Mr. Teisco, Tiki, and all, I'll be back to drive you crazy again soon!

Your Friend,

Eek! The Cat

Day Two - GeorgeW’s Killer Kool Labor Day Party Mix

Derek Cooper and The Minis – Groovin’ On

Twang meet Booker T. and say “hello.” – Derek Cooper is an astonishing blend of splendid guitar and rockin’ soul organ – something like funky tv spy music for those made up organizations. It perks your ears up and is excellent groove music for hangin’ out or barbecuing in the back yard. Unfortunately, not the best original recording so it will sound a little bright. GW

Review –
"Derek Cooper and the Minis" -this fourth release on Simple Kool brings you more rocking blues intrumental soundtrack for your party life. DCM lays out an assortment of "ear candy" for your listening pleasure, ranging from funky blues, jazzy rock to rocking blues. Starting with funky drumbeats, rockin bass lines and bluesy 'boards, Derek Cooper let's it all go with his jazzy/rockin blues lead guitar lines, kinda like Albert Collins, Eric Clapton, Santana,and Duane Allman rolled into one trying to sound like Art Pepper. Fundamentally a "progressive" blues band, their funky rock and jazzy excursions suit the feel and vibe of the 21st century. CD Baby

Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi
Chosen by The Thievery Corporation

Bossa Nova, Jazz, Reggae and Lounge-Pop are what the Thievery Corporation is all about. The resurrection of the downtempo-lounge movement of recent years is a reflection/modernization of the original musical craze of over 40 years ago. This CD is a nice tribute compilation of various artists and gives us an idea of TC's inspirational roots.

Here are the roots of modern cool. Some of the starting points for acid jazz.

Imagine James Bond (the original Sean Connery) strutting with his eye on Pussy Galore, introducing himself as Bond.....James Bond with a martini in hand as the featured "For Mods Only " plays in the background by Chico Hamilton. This is music from the 60's, when spies were spies and Peter Sellers was shagadelic. This was the time when world music was spreading it's wings, east meets west with the introduction of sitars and tablas as in the catchy Richie Havens (he of the "Freedom" cry at Woodstock) number included here entitled "Something Else Again." It was a time when pop rock was making the crossover to jazz artists interpretations as in Astrud Gilberto's version of the Doors "Light My Fire". The musical boundries were beginning to be blurred. Some artists were experimenting with Latin rhythmns. The Latin flavors abound with some tasty offerings by one of the great vibe players Cal Tjader and his "Cuchy Frito Man." A few songs are on the fringe of straight ahead jazz like the the numbers by former John Coltrane pianist Wynton Kelly's Trio entitled "Escapade" or the jazz vocal stylings offered by The Jazz Renegades on "Do it the Hard Way ."

Good music is good music no matter when it was made. I find this compilation to be excellent. If you like Bossa Nova, or some groovalicious jazzy beats, then you'll probably like this disc. The music is lively but light. Perfect for party mixing. Give it a try, if you do, all your wildest dreams will come true. Ok, maybe not, but this is one fine CD.

Review ---

Get ready for your jazz education. These virgin, unremixed tracks taken from the 1960s Verve vaults were a major influence on Thievery Corporation's Rob Garza and Eric Hilton years before they spun epic documents like The Mirror Conspiracy. Their time capsule is a bubbling, Brazilian soul-jazz blast, starting with the sensuous "Menina Flor" by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. Jimmy Smith's "Road Song" is a classic of '60s hard bop, while Kenyon Hopkins's "Hard Latin" shows the kind of groovy organ jazz that was popular in bars from Philly to hot 'Lanta. Things go left with Cal Tjader's "The Fakir," a day-glo Middle Eastern track influenced by Coltrane's "My Favorite Things," while Astrud Gilberto pulls a Nancy Sinatra on another freaky standout, "Light My Fire." Walter Wanderley, Wynton Kelly, Chico Hamilton, and Elis Regina also light up the night, along with your hi-fi. --Ken Micallef

Montefiori Coctail -- Raccolta #2

People are always asking me who is this CD! Any disc that starts with a bossa version of the “Star Wars” theme has me at go. The musicianship of the two brothers is stunning. It’s great versions of lounge-jazz-samba-type tunes sound just familiar enough to get people of every age and musical taste walking around with a bit more style – making them more hip, nodding their heads and splashing their martinis. Some of the few vocals are in Italian, one of them is a hilarious update of that nasty weeper “Sunny” from the 60’s. The other vocal standout is their beatcentric version of Donna Summer’s hit – “I Feel Love”. Worth the price of admission for this cut alone! Will add a little klass to any get together. For great a positive lounge vibe, this is it.

Reviewer: Robert Dollinger "Calvaria"
Unique, addictive, bizarre. This release contains some of the coolest "tragically hip" lounge music ever. How can these guys play their horns so well with tongue so firmly implanted in cheek? The bari sax is worth the price of admission alone! Guaranteed to loosen up any stiff party (or party of stiffs). This music is just great fun!!! This is the ultimate party album. The music is completely goofy, but irresistible. You can't help but smile and dance. Horns and keyboards are all mixed up in a sound that might best be described as the love-child of Pee-Wee Herman and Robert Goulet. If you steadfastly refuse to take life seriously, this is the album for you.

Track Listing:

Calvert DeForest’s Erotic Experience

This compilation sports lots of 60s "cool" music spanning pure jazz to strange cocktail sounds. Calvin DeForest aka Larry Bud Melman's Erotic Experience is a sampler of who's who in the cocktail lounge genre, including current modern martini mavens --- the Craftmatics, Combustible Edison and Tipsy, along with the classics - Dusty Springfield, Henry Mancini, Count Basie and Quincy Jones. This compilation has a sophisticated swank appeal, even though a few tracks are a bit cliché since Austin Power’s has made the genre more popular. As hokey as the title is -- Calvert sings on only 1 cut -- Tequila --like he was an 18 year old stud-muffin. I like it – it’s pretty fun. The disc does have a few selections not available anywhere else, so grab it, shake and stir, retro mod style!

Review -

Not a bad lounge collection, especially at this price, March 31, 2007
Danno, NY,Ny Amazon.com

Calvert DeForest is better known as Larry "Bud" Melman from the David Letterman TV show, and he lent his name and image to this late 1990s lounge compliation CD. In terms of song selection, the quality is nearly as good as the Ultra-Lounge series. Given that this is a late 1990s-CD, the artwork and song selection also play up the then-current "Austin Powers" movies and this CD has a lot in common with the music from those films. In fact, if you walked into a room and heard this playing you'd probably assume it *was* the Austin Powers soundtrack CD. If you like what you're hearing so far, just get the CD. You won't regret it.

If you're a Calvert DeForest fan, you'll appreciate his odd vocals on "Tequila." If you aren't a fan, don't worry - it's the last song on the CD and you can skip this typically surreal comedy.

1. Mr. Excitement - Tipsy
2. Laura's Aura - Combustible Edison
3. Soul Bossa Nova - Quincy Jones
4. The Look Of Love - Dusty Springfield
5. Music To Watch Girls By - Bob Crewe Generation
6. Peter Gunn - Henry Mancini And His Orchestra & Chorus
7. Thomas Crown Affair: A Man's Castle - Michel Legrand
8. Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars - Barbara Acklin

11. Saturday Music - Dick Jacobs

Hi Everyone:

As you know Eek has been real busy these past weeks setting up incredible posts and supervising compilation productions and he needs a break. He has kindly offered me the opportunity to guest host again and really turn on the juice. His birthday is right after Labor Day, so I thought everyone would really enjoy a party. These next posts are my programming for a killer Labor Day party that I think everyone would have a blast at. All the posts are programmed to go together for a full day/evening of fun and cool grooves. Eek has generously allowed the flexibility to add a different variety of music that you haven’t seen here previously. They reflect my style, more than Eek so – whether you like or don’t like a particular post – it all goes on me – not Eek. It’s always good to expose people to potentially new things – ENJOY and let us know how you think and feel!!

One of my favorite surf-exotica-rockers with a slightly dark edge to their sound. This is effectively the live version of A Savage Night, posted earlier by me under the Vanduras. (See post for reason). This is an explosive show, the energy builds to a fever pitch by the time they get to Link Wray’s “Jack The Ripper” and the Dick Tracy theme. Classics like Lee Hazelwood's "A Cheat," Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon," and traditional surf hits - "Pipeline and Apache” get a full on treatment with EXCELLENT musicianship throughout. GW guarantee you will listen to this on more than once.

Review by Glenn Swan
Live at the Lava Lounge is a fireball of hipster cover tunes performed by the swingers of the surf torch, the Blue Hawaiians. Earning points for authenticity, the quartet members pay tribute to the likes of Jerry Cole and Lee Hazlewood, but they'll frequently pepper things up with wild cards like the jazz staple "Caravan," Lionel Hampton's "Red Top," and even a pulped-up version of "Jockey Full of Bourbon" by Tom Waits. Dreamy slide guitar shorelines segue to inner-city Thunderbirds in the endless pursuit of cool. Mark Fontana's crooning on a couple of these tracks (notably "A Cheat") throws a sort of David Lynch haze over the ears. Initially, this style of music seldom lends itself to any performances of wild abandon, but the musicians all take turns sneaking a little extra heat onto the stage over the course of the hour, until the band is so warmed up that the chairs have started to melt. The call and response of "Jet Black" clicks out an edgy switchblade tango, and "Jack the Ripper" is a cross between a gang rumble on the pier and Gidget with a whip. Any hints at crime noir along the way finally get their cover blown by the explosive "Dick Tracy" theme, a fall over backwards finale to a show that has steadily grown in energy and aggression. For a live set it's a great recording, and there's no denying the solid musicianship and energy. Equally important is that everyone -- on-stage and off -- was having a good time.

Laika and the Cosmonauts -- Laika Sex Machine

A buddy of mine came back from Finland where he was visiting his fiancée and gave me a tape of “this whacked out Finnish surf band” which he said was right up my alley – and he was right. I loved the tape and it took years to find out who it was.

Review –
Finland's favorite retro-rockers rev up with a generous 26-song, 75-minute set of music recorded live, predominantly in 1998 and on their home turf. Except for some brief introductions in both English and the band's native tongue, this is a non-stop roller coaster ride through instrumental rock & roll. The quartet plays with fire and fury whether covering genre classics like "Telstar" or obscurities such as Roy Budd's theme to "Get Carter." Not surprisingly, a Ventures tune gets worked in, but the group digs deep into the California band's catalog to unearth "Fugitive." The foursome charges through a unique combination of Bernard Herrmann's themes from Psycho and Vertigo in a composite renamed "Psyko." "Mission Impossible" also gets the Laika treatment as they speed and trash it up in a breathless version that doesn't break the two-minute mark. While not as recognizable, the group churns out originals with as much flair touching on hard rock with a slight Spanish matador approach on "Look! No Head!" and the "Walk Don't Run"-styled "Floating" which stands as a contemporary surf classic. Many of these tracks appear in less frantic fashion on the band's studio albums, but the live approach electrifies these versions. Certainly you'll never hear "Ode to Billy Joe" the same way after experiencing Laika's take on the song (which they rename "Sauna-Soul" for no apparent reason). With its extended playing time, there is plenty of room for experimentation on a low-down run-through of Henry Mancini's "Experiment in Terror," a showcase for Matti Pitsinki's distorted organ sounds. The rhythm section is spry but stays out of the way of the lead guitar and keyboards that drive this music. Crowd noise is minimal to non-existent, smartly keeping the focus on the tight musicianship and superbly well-recorded tunes. Better and more lively than the group's slightly less compelling studio albums, this is a rousing live performance from one of contemporary music's most talented and creative instrumental combos. Four Piece Suit – Ready To Where

If you have seen the TV show, “Sex In The City,” you have heard Four Piece Suit already. They do the opening theme and some of the incidental background score for the show.

I love their "spy/surf" music the most, but their mix of old time rock and roll, Latin themes, beach party music, and other unclassifiable tunes is very ear-catching from start to finish. David Sholl's sax is better than having a lead singer, and Milt Reder's guitar work is outstanding. Dean Cassell on bass and Lorne Entress on drums are showcased on a few songs as well.

You haven't heard a band like them. But you'll almost certainly like them.

Review – Stevie “8”
This band rocks! They swing! They swagger! They're the absolute most - to say the very least! Hailing from the greater Boston area, Four Piece Suit lays to rest those nasty rumors that the East Coast has no swing!
Choice cuts: "A Shot in the Dark", "Theme From Exodus", "Something for Cat" and "Dark Eyes" all are guaranteed to get your happy feet moving on the dancefloor - whether you want to swing, twist, frug, or just do that drunken frat-boy shuffle. Throughout it all, David Sholl's sax wails one its sexy-siren call above the grooving guitars.
Picture a beach party where Frankie Sinatra drops Ava Gardner for Annette Funicello. THIS is the CD they'd be playing!

Eek! The Cat Presents:

The Space Cossacks - Interstellar Stomp

Talk about "Style ..." These guys had it in spades! After two albums and a "Best Of," they called it quits, but Croatian lead guitarist, Ivan Pongracic, has moved on to the band, "The Madeira." They have one Full length CD, Sandstorm, out, and one EP, Ruins, which personally, I think is MUCH better than the full length album. But Ivan's style, buckets of reverb and Middle Eastern scales lead the band in a new direction while maintaining their roots.

Anyway, The Space Cossacks are where they got good, and so here, in 192K, is Interstellar Stomp!

Track Listing:

The Space Cossacks - Intersteller Stomp - 192K

The Atomic Mosquitos - The Atomic Mosquitos

Aaaiiieeee!! It's Mothera! No, it's Rodan! No, it's The Atomic Mosquitos! And they ARE a monster band with a great sound! Remember when we were talking about bands that were slightly "generic" sounding? Well, there's NOTHING generic about these guys! I first stumbled upon their website a couple of years ago, and they had two songs available for free download. It was KILLER instro, but I couldn't find the album anywhere! I've had a folder called "Atomic Mosquitos (Misc)" on my hard drive for those two years. It now has five songs in it, including "Flight Of The Mosquitos." It sat there in between "Aqualads and "Atomic Regulators" until either Al Zombie or Mr. Teisco offered up their complete first album, the self-titled The Atomic Mosquitos, in 320K! Woo Hoo!

That was back in May. About a week ago, Mr. Teisco passed along what I think is their second album, Release the Mosquitos!, from 2005, and also in 320K! Man, it doesn't get any better than putting these two albums on back to back! And you don't even have to worry about Bird Flu! ... OR Rodan! :>} (No, it's not supposed to make sense!)

Anyway, without further ado or adon't, I give you: The Atomic Mosquitos!

Robert Johnson & The Punchdrunks - The Birdnest Years

Sorry it has taken so long to get this album yo you. Sharebee has been giving me all kinds of problems. I even tried uploading the first of 2 CDs to Rapidshare, but, it, like Sharebee, "Reset the connection" about half-way through. But finally, here it is! :>}

I had this album for a loooong time before I finally decided to listen to it. In fact, I had it more than a year! Now I can but think "All that wasted time without RJ & The PD!" The Great and Powerful JimK turned me on to it with the highest recommendation, but for some reason, it just kept getting shuffled to the "back of the stack." I think JimK even asked me about them a couple of times, and I mumbled around one answer or another. I think it was the name, "Robert Johnson." It evokes connotations of an old blues player on an out-of-tune acoustic guitar with strings so high off the frets that you have to use a slide and "chicken" chords. I could even hear (in my mind's ear) the pops and crackles coming from the old 78 RPM vinyl, with the 16 penny nail as a needle.

Yeah, I know that this Robert Johnson isn't that Robert Johnson. And now I'm the one doing the recommending! Listen and love it! I'm not going to try to describe it. It'll be a surprise. :>} Just be prepared for something ... different - but excellent!! And it's presented in 320 VBR from JimK through Al Zombie!

Eek! The Cat Presents:

The Razorblades - The Dark Side Of The Beach

Good morning! If you've EVER taken my word for the quality of a band, then get this one! From the first tune, Surf like an Egyptian, it kicks out the jams with harmony guitars and doesn't let up! We've talked about bands not having their own style, or sounding generic before, but these guys DO NOT fit into that category! I haven't been this excited about a new album in a while, and even though I've had this album for several months, I JUST got around to giving it a listen. In fact, I'm listening to track 5, Clubflat, right now and all I can say is Holy Crap! Like Ryp says, "Git It!!!!" And it's in 320K, too! It either comes to us from Mr. Teisco or Al Zombie, but I just can't remember which. I believe it was Mr. Teisco.

Oh, and sorry about making you read that short short story. I've never heard the crickets chirruping after a post before ... :>} It was muy weirdo.

One last thing, you prolly already know this, but if you click on the album cover, it will usually lead you to a larger version, but most of the time, the covers and stuff are included in the rar files.

Hypnomen - Supersonico!

"Come ..... here!" and "You have a strong will ... Vannnn Helsing ..." Bela Lugosi may have been the master of hypnotism (and that great finger thing he did when "commanding" his victims), but could he play guitar? No! But his band from Finland, Hypnomen, sure can!

Today I have two albums from this great, but under-exposed group. I'm not positive, but I believe this is their first album which was released in 1996. If you've never heard them, you're in for a treat! And I believe that these Hypnomen albums come to us from Master Al Zombie at 320K!

Gone Fishing
by Eek! The Cat

Mr. Peavy leaned his frail, 100 pound frame back into his reading chair and rubbed his tired, steel grey eyes under his wire-rimmed glasses. He was excited; it felt like watching a lightning storm from an open doorway.

He had discovered that he could will himself into any book. No, that's not quite right, he thought. He willed himself into the reality that the author had created. And now, so close to his retirement, he had a Grand Idea.

He had always wanted to be a hero but had instead become head librarian at the Library of Congress. Now he could be all heroes.

When the assistant librarian showed up for work the next morning, she was puzzled. In all of the fifteen years that she had worked with Mr. Peavy, he had never failed to open the library on time. Now here it was nine-fifteen, and the library doors were still locked. As she fumbled in her purse for her keys, she sighed, "What a funny old man."

"Oh, Mr. Pee-vee!" she called as she looked through the empty offices for him. When she came to the micro-film vault, she saw that the door was ajar.

As she peered through the open door, she saw several boxes of micro-film open on the counter, and there was a note lying next to them with three words on it. When she read it, she just shook her head and said to herself, "What a funny, funny old man!" The note said:

GONE FICHEING,
PEAVY

The End
